Inland properties are becoming ever more popular for people moving to live in Spain. In the past if you moved to Spain you lived on the coast usually in an area with a large concentration of other foreigners. This made it easier for people to integrate as the ex-pats formed their own small communities and local services specifically catering for English people and other foreign nations appeared. It became more and more popular up to about 5 years ago when people started looking for something different. Admittedly some people do still look for these English communities but more and more people want to live in the real Spain.

Initially this meant people spreading out from the big tourist destinations to other coastal towns. Over the last 5 years though even these have grown to have much larger numbers of foreigners living there. This isn’t always a bad thing as it means it isn’t a necessity to learn Spanish before moving there and there will be people you can turn to for support if you run in to difficulties.

There are still nice untouched Spanish towns on the coast but they are becoming fewer and fewer. People who are looking for traditional Spain and a more peaceful relaxed lifestyle are now turning to rural areas of inland Spain. If you think this might be right for you there are a number of things you should consider. Rural Spain is mostly untouched by tourism and is very traditional. You would struggle to get by in such an area if you don’t already speak the language. The big advantage though for most is that you aren’t moving to what is basically Blackpool (English Seaside Resort!) with nicer weather.

The other big advantage of rural inland Spanish property is that they are far cheaper than coastal locations. The prices on the coast have been pushed up by people buying them to use as holiday homes. Like anything else, increased demand leads to increased prices. In rural locations you can find habitable homes starting from €30,000 and even stunning villas for less than €100,000. Spain in general doesn’t have the hustle and bustle of England but there is an even greater contrast in inland rural locations. If you are looking for a relaxed lifestyle with a slow pace of life it could be ideal for you.

The capital of Spain with a truly cosmopolitan atmosphere, also Europe’s highest capital. Located virtually in the centre of Spain, Madrid shares many of the characteristics of other European capitals. Full of upmarket bars, restaurants and shops with many of the countries top companies having their headquarters here. The city is full of culture and you would never get tired wandering the endless streets of shops. Of course you pay a premium for living in the capital, and the price of property and living costs put many people off. However if this doesn’t put you off you can find many apartments in the centre and excellent villas in the city suburbs.

The most popular destination for British tourists full of lively resorts with every amenity imaginable. The resorts of Torremolenos, Fuengirola and Marbella are some of the most popular and would be great for people who don’t want to feel like they are still in the UK only with better weather. There are miles of sandy beaches and you can expect sun 320 days a year. There are plenty of purpose built apartment blocks and complexes created just for tourists looking to buy in the region. Like many of the other regions if you venture inland you can find some more sedate towns and some beautiful white villages the have been over looked by the tourist industry.

Found on the east side of Spain running from Barcelona to Tarragona with around 150 miles of golden beaches. One of the most popular resorts in this region is Salou with its beach front apartments. The night life here is less lively than Costa Blanca and Costa Brava and has a more friendly, family, feel to it. If you are buying in Spain for lazy days on golden beaches this may be the perfect place for you.

The “wild cost” full of bustling holiday resorts with lots of apartments and villas. Here you find another region that surrives almost fully on its thriving tourist industry. This means that there are an abundance of holiday homes available to suite all different budgets. The climate is a little milder than southern Spain but still excellent almost all year round. You will find the resort of Tossa de Mar on the Costa Blanca which offers British pubs, late night bars and plenty of other entertainment facilities. If you are looking for somewhere with good night life this should deffinitely be considered. Also on the Costa Brava is Pineda de Mar if you are looking for somewhere more typically Spanish. Here the lively pubs and clubs are fewer and you will find a wider range of restaurants and bars.

This is one of the most popular locations for people buying a home in Spain with lots of purpose built complexes. Perhaps the most popular location in Spain for tourists looking for a holiday in the sun as well those looking to buy a home in Spain. It is home to Benidorm the location of choice for many English holiday makers. You will also find many holiday home complexes in this region particularly in Torrevieja which is a very popular location for people buying property in Spain. Alicante can also be found on the Costa Blanca and is a great place to start your search for a property as the are regular flights to many UK airports. Although fewer than in some regions you can still find some small villages unaffected by tourism if you are looking for a typically Spanish home.

One of the lesser know Costas situated just above the Costa Blanca and home to Valencia. Home to lots of small unspoilt towns and villages and still a popular location for Spanish holiday makers. There are far fewer large apartment blocks and less nightlife than on many of the other Costas. This is reflected in the price of houses on the Costa del Azahar which are much lower than other areas. If you are wanting to rent your house when it’s not in use you will find property in this are will not demand quite as a high a weekly rate as some of the more popular regions. However you should be able to rent it for most of the summer season and some of the winter. On the Costa del Azahar you will also find the city of Valencia if you are looking for a city apartment.

Perhaps the most historical regions of Spain, with far less tourism than most other areas. Known as one of the most historical regions in Spain it is starting to become more popular with tourists as rural tourism takes off. If you are looking for a traditional Spanish home in a traditional Spanish village or town this is probably where you should start your search. As tourism is much less widespread than in other areas and there are very few foreigners buying houses in the region prices have stayed lower. The cities in the region are a mix of traditional and modern Spain with very unique characters. You will find many castles dotted throughout the Basque Country from the conflicts in the middle ages, including some of the most beautiful in Spain. Making it a great place for history lovers to buy their place in Spain.

The first thing you have to decide, and probably already have, is what you want your home in Spain for. Whether you are looking for an apartment in the heart of a lively city or a traditional villa miles from anywhere you can definitely find what you are looking for in Spain. Many of the towns on the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and lots of other coastal resorts have become tourist havens and the nightlife and entertainment available has grown because of this. While this may be great for a short holiday make sure you know exactly what you are getting before you chose to buy a place in one of these towns.

More and more people buying homes in Spain are now choosing somewhere far less lively and more typical of traditional Spain. There are literally thousands of inland towns and villages which offer a taste of the real Spain. However these too aren’t without their disadvantages, if you are the first foreigners to move in to a town or village you may find it difficult to fit in. This can be particularly hard if you don’t already speak Spanish. Don’t let this put you off however, as there are now lots of towns and villages that have small communities of English and other nationalities that make settling in a lot easier. If you are only planning on using the home for occasional holidays to get away from it all, and have no plans to move there permanently you shouldn’t worry about these factors as much.
